Online TV viewing catching on, traditional TV watching still preferred

July 4th, 2008 · No Comments

Filed under:

We've known that individuals were turning to the internet to catch their favorite shows for some time now, but we aren't living in the future just yet. According to new research conducted by Nielsen and CTAM, most adults (94%) who "subscribe to cable or satellite television services prefer to watch television on traditional TV sets." Still, over a third of those surveyed who had a broadband connection admitted to watching at least one television program originally shown on TV via the internet, and nearly 40% of online TV viewers also use the world wide web to "get the scoop on actors and upcoming episodes." For numbers galore on this very topic, head on down to the read link and have a look.

This is What Happens When You Combine Boba Fett, Flashdance and Fireworks [Star Wars]

July 4th, 2008 · No Comments

This is what happens when you mix Boba Fett, Flashdance and fireworks: a brilliant, but somehow disturbing stop-motion animation, that's what. Damn you, Patrick Boivin, for mixing everyone's favorite Star Wars bounty hunter with the movie scene that made me horny for the first time. On the other side, it could have been a lot worse:

Told you. [Club Jade]

The UBiqWindow: Google Earth Hologram Device You’ll Want [Google Earth]

July 4th, 2008 · No Comments

If you can forgive the fairly craptastic music, you'll just love this video of Google Earth mashed up with a hologram machine. This is real, and I want one very, very badly. By combining a 2D mid-air projection system and motion sensors, the device gives you a gesture-based interface for exploring the world. The term "badass" springs to mind. Nike’s High Tech Team USA Olympic Track Suits Shave Fractions Off Races [Future Spandex]

July 4th, 2008 · No Comments

This is not a leaked American Gladiators uniform. It's Nike's design for the US Olympic Track and Field suits. They're made from Nike's proprietarily named (but possibly a poly-nylon blend synthetic) swift materials. Nike claims the socks and arm coverings, with their dimpled surfaces, break up drag to the tune of 12 to 19% in those areas. The suits, Nike claims, can bring a typically sub-10 second run in the 100-meter dash down by .02 seconds. [Gizmag]

Best Fireworks Ever Not Happening Today but in Three Days [The End]

July 4th, 2008 · No Comments

If you think you are going to see some cool fireworks today, just wait three more days. Because we just checked the countdown and that's when the Large Hadron Collider will be activated in Geneva, Switzerland. Then we all will enjoy the mother of all fireworks. Well, not us, but the aliens, Tom Cruise, Elvis and the rest of what's left of the Universe. So enjoy your weekend, my friends (you conspiracy morons of the world included) because life is too short, even if the LHC doesn't destroy the galaxy. [LHC Countdown]

HDTVs Have Hidden Feature: Poison Gas [HDTV]

July 4th, 2008 · No Comments

Did you know that your HDTV has a gas in it that could make you and your family sick and destroy the planet? It's true, a gas called Nitrogen Trifluoride, and it's bad stuff. Apparently thousands of times worse for the planet than CO2, it's a greenhouse compound that could significantly contribute to global warming. And it's bad to inhale, poisoning your liver and kidneys. It's not a real issue right now, but when landfills of the future start filling up with older HDTVs, it could be a problem. Luckily by then we'll have colonized another planet to mess up. [CrunchGear]

HD goes underground in London’s Tube

July 4th, 2008 · No Comments

London Underground
Light control is probably the biggest challenge to a good projection setup. The subterranean nature of London's subway is pretty much ideal in that regard, and now CBS Outdoor has brought its cross-track projection (XTP) system to the Tube. The Piccadilly Circus, Euston, Bank, Liverpool Street and Bond Street stations have been outfitted with a total of 23 14-foot screens that are getting HD video ads beamed onto them, sans audio (thankfully). There are plans to build out to 150 XTP screens and compliment them with 2,000 digital screens Tube-wide, which all fits in with CBS Outdoors' plans to bathe subway riders in advertisement. If ad-targeting tech is brought into the equation, we see some potential for really embarrassing hilarity. Meanwhile, London readers are encouraged to let us all know how the picture XTP quality is holding up!

Concurrent updates Start Over timeshifting service

July 4th, 2008 · No Comments

Filed under:

By now, if its available in your area you're probably familiar with Start Over, basically a network DVR letting people see the beginning of a TV show they might have missed. Of course, all of that's only useful if it actually works and captures everything, so Concurrent has announced its latest advance for the backend is the Real Time Pitcher 2000, using reliable multicast to ensure no loss of video capture due to network or component failures and give it the big five nines of reliability. We certainly wouldn't want anything less tha a 99.999% chance of catching the first five minutes of The Closer, would you?

MetroCast tosses 6 new HD channels to Starkville, MS

July 4th, 2008 · No Comments

While AT&T is mulling the idea of moving into Mississippi, MetroCast is busy boosting its relatively pathetic HD lineup. According to a flyer received by a subscriber in Starkville, the carrier is introducing six new HD channels effective immediately to bring the total to 16. Without further adieu, they are: Science HD (414), TLC HD (415), Animal Planet HD (416), Outdoor HD (417), Discovery HD (418) and HBO HD (506). The outfit is also tossing in a few analog and digital SD stations, but we can pretty much guess how much those will excite you. Oh, and we can't say for sure, but it sounds like customers in Kosciusko and Philadelphia may also see the newcomers.

[Thanks, Reed]
